The Play's The Thing
Trinity Rep Captures the Conscience of the King with Shakespeare's Masterpiece, Hamlet
Theater Review By Paul Pence
Anyone who attended high school in Rhode Island is familiar with Hamlet. It's required reading. Legions of schoolkids have toiled with translating "To be, or not to be..." into their own verson of modern English and tried to make sense of a moody ghost-seeing prince set on revenge. But Hamlet, first and foremost, is a play, intended for an audience to experience rather than something to ponder on the page. Through the remainder of February, Trinity Rep is provides Providence with that experience with their presenation of Hamlet ...

Christmas Carol at Trinity Rep A Christmas Carol at Trinity Rep
Providence's Favorite Christmas Tradition
By Paul Pence
The Christmas Carol is a Rhode Island holiday tradition that I have finally had a chance to experience in person. I'd heard about it for years -- "You can't start Christmas without going to the Trinity Rep first"... "Scrooge will get you in the spirit!" So when I had the opportunity this year to attend the opening night of Trinity's Christmas Carol, I jumped at the chance.

Crescent Park Looff Carousel, East Providence, RI Crescent Park's Looff Carousel
Crescent Park was the largest and most spectacular of all of Rhode Island's Victorian-era amusement parks. Amusement parks in those days included boating, games, picnics, music, tunnels of love, and, noteably, carousels. Crescent Park featured a grand carousel with 62 hand-carved figures and four chariots -- a masterpiece of carousels designed as a showcase of the talents of Charles I.D. Looff.

What do you do with a novel left unfinished when a master storyteller passes on? Well, if you're playright Rupert Holmes, you create a Tony Award winning musical comedy that embraces the fact that the work was unfinished. If you're Trinity Rep, you see a play that reaches out into the audience and draws its membersin as participants of the play. And if you're me, you go see it and laugh yourself silly.

If you want to see a work of art by Gilbert Stuart, open your wallet. In the center of the one-dollar bill, sits George Washington -- looking somewhat glum. Look for the bright yellow and red building. You won't find it on the first try... it's tucked behind the Wakefield Main Street shops, just past Phil's diner. But when you do spot the building, it's like finding a brighly-dyed Easter egg. Or maybe a brightly wrapped Christmas present.

I Eat PandasI Eat Pandas
Musical Improv Troupe Performs Improvised Musicals!
Rhode Islanders might remember "I Eat Pandas" from their remarkable performance at the second annual Providence Improv Fest. There they set a countdown clock for 20 minutes after getting audience suggestions, and then completed a 20-minute musical on the spot, followed by a 10-minute musical and then a 5-minute, all based on the same suggestion. After witnessing this on-stage magic, Everett Dance Theatre Artistic Director Dorothy Jungels decided that I Eat Pandas must be brought back to Providence to perform at the Carriage House Stage.

Murder at the Towers - The Narragansett Towers hosts A Killer Caberet Murder at the Towers
Narragansett Towers Hosts a "Killer Cabaret"
By Linda Eagleson
Along the long, windy road, were homes decorated in the traditional white lights, Santa figurines, and even patches of snow that hadn't been washed away with the rain. The smell of the salty sea air and a soft spray of seawater washed our faces as we made our way from the car to the Towers of Narragansett. Recently renovated in the past few years, to accommodate weddings, dinners theaters, fashion shows, and a host of other events, we were going to be entertained in the surrounding that once was devastated by fire.

Napa Valley Grille, Providence, RI California Wine Country Cusine in Providence
Napa Valley Grille, Providence, RI
By Paul Pence
I'm frequently tempted by Napa Valley Grille's creative, light, and wonderfully flavorful California Wine Country cuisine -- its delicate seasonings and complex preparations where every ingredient plays its own role, but none dominates to the detriment of the dish make their foods a delight. And when I remember that they have one of the largest wine selections in Rhode Island, an attentive and knowledgeable staff, and a casual atmosphere, the temptation becomes overpowering.

Ocean State Chamber Orchestra - OSCOMaking Music Intimate
A conversation with Ocean State Chamber Orchestra's music director, Ann Danis
By Erica Berenstein
Ann Danis radiates positive energy. Her enthusiasm for classical music is centered around her desire to make it accessible and popular for people, children, and anyone who will listen. Trying to break with the associations that accompany the pairing of the words “classical” and “music,” Danis founded the Ocean State Chamber Orchestra in 1991. “If you want to listen to great music and see people actually enjoying themselves, you need to come join us,” she told me over coffee. According to the audiences, OSCO is Rhode Island’s best kept secret. In such a small state with such a strong arts scene, this seems nearly impossible.

PendragonPendragon
Keepers of the Celtic Musical Tradition
By Paul Pence
Every year for St. Patrick's Day, Rhode Islanders become Irish. Those of us whose lineage may or may not have included ancestors from Ireland become a wee bit Irish for just a day. And on that day, those of us whose blood runs green year around and in whose heart beats the tunes of the Irish hills become even more Irish.

Pete Breaking Up Laughing
Pete 'n' Keely was a great way for us to meet the Mill River Players
By Paul Pence
They started arguing right after dinner, and they didn't stop arguing for two hours. And we laughed. No, we aren't some kind of sick nutcases who enjoy other people's misery. (At least, not more than most people.) My wife and I were guests of Mill River Dinner Theater on Valentine's Day and we were watching the 1960's "live-TV" reunion show of Pete 'n' Keely -- the show business couple who rehashed their musical meeting, marriage, and bitter breakup at Mill River Dinner Theater.

Skipper and JackSkipper and Jack
Wickford's Ventriloquist Duo
By Paul Pence
At two years old, Jack does a lot of talking. That's not an uncommon feat for two-year-olds, but considering that Jack is made of wood and that he does his talking in front of groups of delighted children, he reaches the point of wonder. Jack is classically-styled ventriloquist dummy, part of the team, "Skipper and Jack". George Silva is "Skipper". Together they entertain children and adults alike at parties and gatherings around Rhode Island.

Tricia Cline (Woodstock, Vermont), Deborah Muirhead (Storrs, Connecticut), Jane Rosen (San Gregorio, California) and Suzanne Volmer (Lincoln, Rhode Island) are clearly geographically diverse and they were not acquainted prior to this exhibition. But there is never the less a pronounced kinship of creative process, a like-minded endeavor about their projects. Judith Tolnick Champa, Exhibition Curator, identifies that special kinship in this exhibition she calls "Speaking Volumes."

Kenn Speiser hated gym class. So much so, he would do anything to avoid it.Instead of wearing the requisite white socks and sneakers, Speiser discovered that the ticket out of gym was wearing black socks and black shoes. Each time he arrived to class incorrectly shod, he was sent off to detention. After one too many detentions, the school labeled him a "troubled kid," and placed him in art class with all the other nonconformists.

The WreckThe Wreck Comes Ashore

The pilot script is finished, investors are coming on board, talent has been approached, and a top-notch Hollywood producer is set to direct the test episode that industry pros call a pilot.
