Block Island, Rhode Island
Block Island (New Shorham Township) is celebrated as one of the last great places in the U.S. It's an island about seven miles off the southern coast of Rhode Island, boasting beaches, clay cliffs, lighthouses, and a booming summer tourist season.
The island includes the village of New Shoreham and Issacs Corner.
Of special note are the excellent beaches, Block Island Southeast Lighthouse, Block Island North Lighthouse, and geological sites like Mohegan Bluffs and Rodmans Hollow.
Most of the restaurants around New Shoreham are seasonal, so if you're restricted to the neighborhood of the ferryboat landing, choose one, wait in line, and take your chances. Of special note is the fine dining at Hotel Manisses.
Most people get to the island by the Block Island ferry out of Point Judith (Galilee), or other ferries from Providence/Newport and from New London. There are also several docks for private boats and a small airport for private planes.
